My little cousin Jason is having a major operation today. Jase is 10 years old and was deprived of oxygen during his birth for just a small time which led to some cells in brain being damaged. He's a lovely little lad but has problems with movements and at the moment can't walk or speak and he attends a wonderful school who help him develop these skills. He is having surgery today at the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford and his operation is 'a bilateral derotational osteotomies with pelvic reconstruction and maybe a small adductor tendon release' which means that both his thigh bones are being broken to take out a small piece of bone from each. The bone is then used to reconstruct his hip sockets before his bones are screwed up and plated. Depending on how things go he may also need a nick in the tendons to relax his tight muscles. So pretty serious stuff for a little lad! He'll then be in a hip and leg brace for around 6 weeks for it all to mend. It's kind of nasty when you think that although he can communicate a bit, he can't talk and so can't tell his mum and dad if things are hurting or not right. Please keep him in your thoughts today.
Enjoying the bubbles at our wedding in 2006!
