My 9-year old nephew has recently had a child at school call him names about the colour of his skin. It was normal childish name calling but with a racial tone and of course was really upsetting for N. Our family have skin tones through just about every colour from very pale to very dark so the kids have grown up knowing that there is no difference in people no matter what they look like.
It makes me so angry that a young boy has to get upset because of dumb name calling in the playground and the thing that makes me most angry is the fact that another young boy has been given this awareness of skin colour and exposed to opinions that make him think it means something. My anger is not aimed at the child but at the parents and family who are living in the same world as the rest of us but think it's okay to bring a child up to think in this way.
What sort of human being teaches racial hatred to a child?
The mind boggles.
