We were on the train on the way home last night after a long day of rugby. It was the London 7's at Twickenham at the same time as our game at the Stoop so there were loads of rugby fans wandering around Twickenham when we left, mostly dressed in 70's fancy dress, many slightly inebriated and all in good humour with japes, banter and songs breaking out.
We were almost home when at the stop before ours a big group of lads got on all making loads of noise, shouting, banging on the windows and jeering at people. They appeared to be a football club on a night out. I can't even describe how instantly the relaxed atmosphere on the train changed. These guys stood by the doorway and sang in such an aggressive and intimidating way and in-between they were almost baiting everyone on the train. It was as though they were saying 'look at us - aren't we brilliant?' as they sang dirty songs with obscene words in every line and swore at the top of their voices in between.
Now rugby fans are no angels and some of their songs can be close to the knuckle but somehow when they sing, it's all good-natured and fun and other people on the train will know that they are safe and aren't in any danger. But as soon as these football lads arrived on the train last night, everyone was edgy and getting ready to move carriages as it just felt as though trouble was going to break out at any moment. It was scary, I was worried and I wasn't the only one.
Why do they have to be so angry? And aggressive? And what's with trying to scare people and spoil their evenings? Why do they have to be centre of attention like little children in adult male bodies? And what's with every second word having to be a swear word? Why can't they sing their songs without spitting out every word and projecting anger and vitriol with every word? We had just come from Twickenham with thousands of rugby fans having fun and causing no problem, to a train with around 15 football fans who decided it was okay to scare and annoy everyone.
Thank goodness our stop was next so we could leave all them all behind.
