Just preparing to go up to mum and dads for the weekend and tomorrow we are going to watch....Wasps vs Saints in our penultimate league match of the season. So by the time I next sit here at my computer, Saints could be heading for National Division 1. If Worcester win at Irish and we lose at Wasps, that's it - game over :(I was thinking about this last night and got a bit down about it. I just remembered all the good times, the great wins over Tigers, Bath, Wasps and Llanelli. I'll never forget the cup matches away to Sarries, winning in the dying minutes with a wall of gold, black and green sound. And what price winning the European Cup at Twickers in 2000 with Pat Lam and Tim Rodber at the helm? Those were good days and it's hard to accept that we aren't that team anymore and how far we have fallen. It's kind of sad.
Still, perhaps relegation would do us good. Think of all those great new clubs we would get to visit - Cornish Pirates for one - what a great weekend away! And we get to have our local derby with Bedford again! We can then go to Bedford and meet up with Dad's cousins, we only ever see them at weddings, funerals and....Bedford vs Northampton games! And perhaps it would do the team good, they could re-group, re-plan and re-form a team with heart, get rid of any players who are only there for the money and remember that it's an honour to be able to play rugby for a living, something some of us would love to do
Ironically, Beccehamian Ladies might just be heading for relegation on Sunday too, if they lose their last League match away to Lewes. Imagine that - both my beloved teams being relegated in one Black Sunday... Still it would also do Beccs some good to play in a lower league. Most of our team are quite new and it would be brilliant for them to learn at a lower level - find out what it feels like to score a try! Beccs haven't scored a single League point this year :(
Still - rugby is just a game, it's not life or death and we do it for fun. What's the difference between the Premiership, Division 1, RFUW SE-W3 and SE-W4? At the end of the day, not a lot. We'll still wear the shirt, shout and play our heads off, visit lots of new grounds, have some great days out watching/playing rugby and do some socialising and make some new friends on the way. And that is why I love this game!
I still don't want to get relegated though...
COME ON YOU SAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNTTTTTTSSSSSS!
HEADS UP BEEEEEESSSSSSS - PRIDE AND PASSION!!
